Symposium held to educate parents on child dangers online

Children growing up today now face a myriad of threats online, from cyber bullying to internet predators.

That's why PRMC in Salisbury held its own symposium, titled "Innocence Stolen – Protecting Our Children Online."

The event went in depth with how the internet is misused, including social media, sexting, and more.

Some of the easiest ways to protect your young ones include utilizing filters on devices, and keeping an open line of communication.

The hope is this event will teach parents about the vulnerabilities for children on the internet, and raise awareness for intervention strategies and available internet safety resources.

"What we need to do is create critical consumers," says Vincent DeVivo, community outreach specialist with the Maryland attorney's office.  "We need to reach our kids how to be critical consumers of the technology.  The technology itself is great, but it's only as good as we use it as consumers."

If you are concerned regarding your child's internet use, you can go to Wicomico Child Advocacy Center, or call them at 410-713-3497.
