Salisbury University students and faculty helping translate for COVID-19 patients

SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury University faculty and students are volunteering to help translate for COVID-19 patients. “What we tried to is to organize a group of volunteers from SU. So, we have around 20 people – faculty and students – LatinX students, helping and Creole speaking people that are going to help us,” said university chair of modern language department Corinne Pubill.

The volunteers are helping to translate for Spanish and Haitian Creole speaking people staying in housing provided by Salisbury University. They will be on call in shifts of four to five hours, seven days a week to take zoom calls where they will help translate. Pubill says that about 20 people have volunteered so far.

The professor tells 47ABC that it’s important to make sure the patients feel safe and comfortable. “We really need to help the community, especially right now with that a lot of people are sick. So we need to help the Spanish and Creole speaking employees, especially in the poultry plants,” said Pubill.

Pubill says she’s working on getting more people to help out. Right now the team is waiting on patients to start arriving at the housing.
