Sen. Coons fights for affordable housing despite President Trump’s push on budget cuts

Senator Chris Coons spoke about the future impact of President Trump's Housing and Urban Development budget on June 16, 2017.

According to that budget, it specifically seeks to eliminate funding for Community Development Block Grants, known as CDBG and the HOME Investment Partnership Program.

Under Trump's Fiscal Year budget, state and local communities would lose more than $12 million annually.

This would result in a reduction in local economic development and affordable housing.

Senator Coons spoke at the The Village at McKees Branch, which was a recently completed affordable apartment community with 66 units that used over $2 million in HOME funding.

Senator Coons has been a long time advocate for these programs, since serving as New Castle County Executive.

He mentioned that he has continued his efforts in the Senate for the CDBG and HOME programs.

"I'm grateful for the chance to stand with you here today and say, we should not cut HOME and CBDG. They make a lasting difference in our communities. They build communities that make a difference in our state. They put a floor under families that need and deserve it. And have demonstrated and positive and cumulative impact," Senator Coons says.
