American Legion update

Following a fire from last May, the American Legion in Cambridge is making strides toward returning to its home facility.
The fire occurred during a storm when lightning struck the facility. The most damage was caused by water and smoke.
The building that was built in the 1940s needs renovations to get caught up to date on codes, such as adding a sprinkler system.
In total, the cost of the projects will be a little over $1.5 million. In the meantime, the legion has been able to use the Governor's Hall, thanks to the City of Cambridge.
The legion had been closed down for about eight months, but has returned this year and want the public to know they are open for business.
"We are open for business. This is probably our first real opportunity to give back to the community and to the veterans with this race," said Commander Tommy Anderson.
Cambridge's American Legion is comprised of over 600 members and has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars a year over the past five years.
The hope is to re-open their facility within the next years.
