MD Governor signs bill for Wicomico school board referendum

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan signed a slew of bills into law Tuesday. One measure addresses the School Board in Wicomico County. Right now, members are appointed to the board by the Governor, however multiple requests were made for those positions to be voted on by residents. Senators Jim Mathias and Addie Eckardt sponsored Senate Bill 145, calling for a referendum for voters to decide if the system should change.
In the referendum, Wicomico residents will decide between three options: One, the Governor continues to appoint all seven members; two, five members are elected by district, and two are elected at-large; three, five members are elected by district and two are appointed by the County Council. The referendum will be held this November.
