(GEORGETOWN, Del) – Sussex County Vocational Technical School is building something new on campus that students in several trades will benefit from, providing hands-on experience and opportunities for innovation.

Sussex Tech seniors Jacob Ramirez and Savannah Stevenson, while graduating are excited at the opportunities this house is going to provide.

Stevenson tells WMDT, “I actually like to see things for myself when I feel like other kinetic learners like me would be able to benefit from something like this. It’s amazing to be able to construct a house and like something you do on the actual job site.”

“I think this is a really great experience. It’s not. It’s going to show just how, like, everything aligns off with not just the electrical work. HVAC…” says Ramirez.

The Raven House is an addition more than two years in the works that’s giving a one of a kind, hands on experience for students of all-ages at Sussex Tech.

But how is it going to work?

Capstone Homes President, Jacob Booth tells us, “It’s going to look completed from the outside. So from the outside it will look completed, but it will have exposed components as it goes. As you go back into the building, there’s going to be areas open to the students can actually work and get to, you know, different parts of the home.”

And being able to simulate a work environment gives as close to an on-the-job experience a student can get.

“Our vision was to really create, a learning, space for students that they were able to see. All of the inner workings of what it takes to make a house and also to create a collaboration space,” says Sussex Tech Superintendent, Jason Peel.

The Raven House will be used for Sussex Tech students, as well as apprenticeships in night classes.
