LAUREL, Del. – The Delaware Department of Transportation has announced plans to convert the intersection of Old Stage Road and Salt Barn Road from a two-way stop to an all-way stop in early November.

The changes to the intersection will include new signage and pavement markings. Flaggers will be on-site to direct motorists at the intersection, and motorists are advised to use caution for workers and reduce their speed in work zones.

The new four-way stop comes following multiple fatal crashes at the intersection, including two that occurred just weeks apart.

As WMDT previously reported, on Aug. 27, 54-year-old Norma Eckard of Delmar was killed in a crash with another driver who allegedly ran the stop sign on Salt Barn Road, striking her car. The driver of the other vehicle, identified as 63-year-old James Elliot of Laurel, was arrested on charges including second degree vehicular homicide and driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

The second fatal crash occurred on Sept. 15, when another car failed to stop at the stop sign on Salt Barn Road, striking another car driven by 54-year-old Amy Sier from Mardela Springs. She was taken to a hospital after the crash, where she succumbed to her injuries.
