UPDATE: 61 people arrested, wanted through drug investigation

Dozens of suspects have been swept up by authorities for their alleged connection to the distribution of drugs in Worcester County after more than half a year of covert and overt operations.

“They’re all ringleaders of their own criminal enterprise, there’s no head of the snake so to speak,” says Worcester County State’s Attorney’s Beau Oglesby.

The investigation, named Operation Street Sweeper, has led to the arrest or arrest warrants of 61 people overall.

The eight month long investigation began this past fall and included state police from both Maryland and Delaware. It also included the work of Ocean City police, Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, and Homeland Security.

According to Oglesby, a lot of the work was undercover.

“That [undercover effort] was a very large part of this operation.” he says. “This operation not only involves hand to hand sales to undercover police officers, but it also involves a lot of those community nuisance types of crimes that are associated with drug distribution.”

Lieutenant Ray Austin, assistant commander within the Criminal Investigation Division for the Ocean City Police Department, says it required “boots on the ground”  by investigators to identify suspects.

“They work the streets,” says Lieutenant Austin. “They’re the ones who know who the players are out on the street. They’re in the communities, talking to the people, knowing who’s there.”

Investigators also dove into the web.

“Text messages, Facebook messages, searches on browsers on smart phones,” explains Oglesby. “Just about everything you do in your daily life is somehow captured on that electronic media and when it is seized, it becomes part of the investigation.”

As of Tuesday, we’re told only a “handful” of the 61 people have not yet been arrested.
