North Millsboro Bypass renamed in honor of late DE Sen. Richard Cordrey

Millsboro, Del. – On Wednesday, Governor Matt Meyer signed Senate Bill 349, formally renaming the bypass the Senator Richard S. Cordrey Bypass in honor of the late senator’s decades of public service to the First State.

“In a way that prioritized moving our state forward, and throughout his career, Sen. Cordrey worked to make life easier for working families. This North Millsboro Bypass does exactly that,” Meyer said. “It helps families and local businesses spend less time in traffic and more time where it matters, while making travel through this growing community safer and more reliable. That purpose connects this road to one of his proudest accomplishments.”

Co-sponsored by Senator Brian Pettyjohn (R-District 19), the bill recognizes the Millsboro native who served in the Delaware General Assembly from 1970 to 1996 and later served as Delaware Secretary of Finance.

“People will drive this road and see Sen. Cordrey’s name. Some will remember him and others may wonder who he was. And I hope they ask because the answer is a story worth remembering,” Pettyjohn said. “A farmer and a businessman from Middlesboro who devoted decades of his life to the community that he loved. To the Delaware Senate. To the Delaware Department of Finance and helped shaped finances and economy of our state.”

Meyer and Pettyjohn were also joined by Delaware Department of Transportation Secretary Shanté A. Hastings, bill co-sponsor Rep. Valerie Jones Giltner (R-District 37), Senate President Pro Tempore Sen. David Solkola (D-District 8) and Sen. Gerald Hocker (R-District 20). Cordey’s family members also attended.

Cordey’s grandson Chris Cordrey, speaking on behalf of the Cordrey family, said the recognition was an honor.

“My grandfather, Sen. Cordrey, was born and raised here in Millsboro. He dedicated his life to serving Delaware and improving the community he loved,” he said. “For many years, he recognized the need for this bypass and worked towards a vision that we are proud to see become a reality today. There could not be a more fitting place for him to carry his name.”
