Chamber Chat: Redistricting Impacts on the Eastern Shore

SALISBURY, Md. – In this week’s Chamber Chat, WMDT’s John Trout and Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce President Bill Chambers discussed potential impacts to the Eastern Shore following Maryland’s passage of House Bill 2100, which sends new standards governing congressional redistricting to the ballot this fall.

Maryland’s representation in the U.S. House of Representatives currently consists of seven Democrats and one Republican — Congressman Andy Harris, who represents District 1, which encompasses the entirety of the Eastern Shore. If passed by voters in November, redrawn maps could impact the makeup of District 1 and include more Democratic representation in a traditionally Republican region.

“Whether it’s intentional or unintentional, redistricting will potentially disenfranchise a million voters on the Eastern Shore who have ‘R’ next to their name,” Bill argued.

John and Bill noted Delegate Sheree Sample-Hughes, the sole Democrat in the State’s Eastern Shore Delegation, voted against the measure, breaking with many of her Democratic colleagues over the Bay.

“Obviously, she’s representing her constituents in Somerset — and those folks are conservative Republicans,” Bill remarked. “And she she aligned with the people that elect her to office every four years.”

If ratified by voters this fall, mid-decade redistricting would begin as soon as 2028. Republicans have said they plan to challenge the measure through the court system.
