Lots of Livestock: First Day of the Delaware State Fair
HARRINGTON, Del.- Today was opening day at the Delaware State Fair, and visitors are excited for a variety of activities. But an exhibit that keeps fans coming year after year, is the livestock.
One guest, Ruby Rogers, has attended the fair since she was a kid. And visiting the animals, gives her a bit of nostalgia.
“I’m most excited to see all the really cute animals, all the kind of horses and the cows, and getting to reach in and pet them is my absolute favorite.” Said Rogers.
Livestock showing has been a staple at the fair since the very beginning. Now in it’s 107th year, the fair offers visitors a chance to get up close and personal to cattle, goats, sheep, poultry, swine, and horses.
Deborah Holding has shown her animals at the fair for almost 70 years now, and emphasizes the importance of the work her horse, Sarah, brings to the fair.
“They like to see the livestock because they don’t have an opportunity to get up close and personal with them.” Said Holding. “We enjoy bringing bringing Sarah here so that you know, people can see her and we get to show her and have fun.”
The animal exhibits don’t just bring entertainment of visitors; it also increases exposure to local livestock and agriculture.
Anna Donnaurian is also displaying her horses, and emphasizes that the fair benefits a bigger mission for the states animal industry.
“And it just community outreach is very like it helps the horse industry in Delaware for sure,” said Donnaurian.
