Seaford officials open up time capsule from 1976
SEAFORD, Del. – City officials opened a time capsule, focusing on its history as they held a special ceremony. The city’s government placed this capsule in the ground in 1976, and made it clear officials could not open it until 2026.
Tuesday night was finally the day the capsule was opened. These special artifacts hold such a significant place in many residents’ hearts. Mayor Matt MacCoy said the experience was unreal. “How many people will get the chance to open up a time capsule.”
Among the treasured possessions were a Sussex County Yellow Pages, phone books, periodicals, and the Seaford municipal flag. Each piece was opened by MacCoy, who then told the audience what it was. He tells WMDT it was an honor.
“Looking back at the previous Mayors and previous Councils, and I revere them because they laid the groundwork for all the things we are doing now.”
Longtime resident and current councilman, Alan Quillen, attended the opening. He has lived in the city for years and was a graduate of the Seaford High School Class of 1973.
Quillen was at the time capsule opening from 1976. He speaks about seeing the city advance. “Great to see Seaford has come a long way, and we made a lot of progress.”
The plan is to make another time capsule for 2076, which will include a signed football from the 2025 Seaford Football State Champions.
media coverage from Tuesday’s event, and a picture with all city employees.
That time capsule will be scheduled to be buried in the fall.
“Our current community, and current city, we get to spend it forward. We get to open up history today, and 50 years from now, my children, my kids’ children, we’ll get to open up history we’re making today, 50 years from now.”
