Salisbury Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Attempted Shooting of Step-Daughter’s Boyfriend
SALISBURY, Md. – A Salisbury man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the attempted shooting of his step-daughter’s boyfriend in Jan. 2025.
On Monday, Jun. 29, 60-year-old Arnold Miles was sentenced on charges of first degree assault, firearm use in a violent crime, multiple counts of illegal possession of a regulated firearm, and related charges. This follows his conviction in the Wicomico County Circuit Court on Feb. 18.
“I am grateful to the jury for their thoughtful consideration of the facts in reaching a verdict, and to the Court for imposing a sentence that reflects the gravity of the Defendant’s actions,” State’s Attorney Jamie L. Dykes said. “My office will continue to be diligent in holding accountable those who illegally possess and use firearms to conduct their violent acts… [it] will never be tolerated in Wicomico County.”
On Jan. 22, 2025, following a family conflict from the day prior, Miles exchanged text messages with his step-daughter and her boyfriend. According to court documents, the boyfriend and Miles arranged to meet at the Salisbury City Park later that evening to exchange words and air grievances out. However, upon both parties’ arrival to the park, Miles brandished a handgun he was legally prohibited from possessing, and aimed it at his victim. The victim, who arrived unarmed, held up his hands in surrender before attempting to retreat. In response, Miles fired the gun in the victim’s direction. The victim reported hearing the bullet fly past his ear, narrowly missing his head. The victim was able to escape and immediately contacted law enforcement.
Due to prior criminal convictions, Miles was prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition. Miles was also on probation for two separate narcotics convictions at the time of the offense.
