TRAPPE, Md. – A serious car crash involving an SUV and a tractor trailer shut down traffic on eastbound Route 50 on Wednesday afternoon.

Shortly after 2:00 p.m. on Jun. 10, first responders were dispatched to Route 50 (Ocean Gateway) and Greenfield Avenue to assist with a serious crash. Crews with the Trappe Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Fire Company responded to the accident believed to involve heavy entrapment. Photos from the scene reveal that an SUV struck the back of a tractor-trailer, causing extensive damage to the passenger vehicle.

Crews were successfully able to extricate the SUV’s passengers and driver. Due to the severity of the incident, the Shock Trauma Go-Team was activated by command but was later canceled. Two patients were ultimately flown to regional trauma centers, while additional patients were transported to local medical facilities.

The Maryland State Highway Administration posted about the accident around 3:20 p.m., alerting drivers to the closure of all eastbound lanes on Route 50 between Greenfield Avenue and Barber Road. As of 4:23 p.m., the agency said all lanes were reopened.
