(MILFORD, Del) – Local, county, state, and federal leaders came together in Milford Friday morning to break ground a massive low-income housing project.

I’s part of Interfaith Community Housing of Delaware’s plans to build a new community of affordable homes in Central Delaware.

The project plans to build up to 95 affordable housing units and is one of the largest residential investments.

Funding comes by way of a two and a half million dollars in Housing and Urban Development spending grant.

We caught up with Delaware Senator, Chris Coons about the significance of this project, and how long it’s been in the works to get to Friday’s groundbreaking.

Senator Coons tells WMDT, “It’s actually been recorded on this site since 2007. But having the money to do the pre-development work, was a critical barrier to interfaith housing.”

Coons, alongside fellow Senator, Lisa Blunt-Rochester, Delaware Governor, Matt Meyer and local leadership say Delaware, much like other states in the nation are suffering from a housing shortage for tens of thousands of people.

And the U.S. Senator spoke with us about how projects like this are trying to bring back a sense of affordability in any way possible for people trying to manage their finances.

“Whether it’s gas or groceries, health care, housing, there’s lots of different inputs, but housing is often the most common driver that it’s just not affordable. So interfaith community housing has been building quality affordable housing in Delaware for 60 years. They have a lot of partners and a lot of support…” says Coons.

The plan for the housing project is to complete it and have families moving into the homes in just a couple of years.
