Dover moves away from blue light phones, SU considers adding

removed today — city officials say they weren’t being used at all. meanwhile — salisbury university may be considering adding more of them — in response to recent crimes near campus. 47 abc’s julian sadur reports. natural sound track when calling police in a time of crisis — every second counts — which is why these blue light phone systems exist — providing a direct line to police. in dover – city officials say they voted to remove five of them at some city parks which are closed to the public at night. officials say there is no data showing any of the phones have been used since they’ve been in service for the past ten years — and most people who call police — now use their cellphones. however just because dover is getting rid of them – doesn’t mean they’re not effective – as executive director for the life crisis center – michele hughes explains. one, not all people have cell phones and secondly sometimes its not easy to get at your cellphone in a time of crisis here at salisbury university president dr. janet dudley-eshbach says these blue light phones serve two purposes one to give students a direct line to call police if something should occur, but they also serve as a deterrent to anybody that may be thinking about committing a crime i think they’re incredibly important, they’re important and we may need to install more of them they are there to kind of signal not just to our students but to potential trouble makers that you do something inappropriate our campus there will be a quick response track in addition to blue light phones – dudley eshbach says having more lighting on campus – and possibly adding to their 750 security cameras are also measures they’ve explored to making campus safer. julian sadur – 47 abc salisbury university also wants to let students know they offer a free campus security escort service – where students can call police and have some escort them to their destination during night time hours. the number students can call for that is -410-543-6222
