Salisbury Dedicates Street To Fallen Officer

Salisbury, Md. – In commemoration of national police week, the city of Salisbury has dedicated a portion of church street after the city’s only police officer to fall in the line of duty.

This special dedication pairs with the celebration of National Police week, a time to remember all law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The city dedicated the 100 block of West Church Street as Henry T. Stephens Way, after the only Salisbury officer to be killed while on duty. The ceremony was hosted by the City of Salisbury Police Department with guest speakers including city council members, and Maryland Senators.

“If people see the story, read the story, see the sign it keeps his memory alive” says David Meienschein, Chief of Police of the City of Salisbury.

Officer Stephen’s family was in attendance to celebrate his legacy of dedication and sacrifice.

In regards to the meaningful tribute, Stephens’ daughter, Cheryl Haapala says “68 years ago and he’s still being remembered. What an awesome thing. You know it’s an honor, really it is.”

Other officers of the Salisbury police department received commendations that recognized their acts of bravery while serving the city. Officers that we spoke to say that they hope this ceremony acts as a long-standing reminder to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of public safety.

Signs dedicated to Officer Stephens have already been placed and can be viewed on the 100 block of West Church Street.
