UPDATE: DSP Investigating Fatal Fiery Car Crash in Ellendale

UPDATE: The Delaware State Police (DSP) are continuing to investigate a single-vehicle fatal crash that occurred last week in Ellendale.

At noon on Apr. 17, a Ford Explorer was traveling southbound on Dupont Boulevard, north of McColley’s Chapel Road. Police say their preliminary investigation revealed that the Explorer gradually exited the west edge of the road where it struck a mailbox, road sign, and a large embankment. After the collision, the Explorer caught fire. The unresponsive driver was pulled from the vehicle by bystanders, who began life saving efforts.

The driver, 81-year-old Michael Jeffra, of Georgetown, was originally believed to have experienced a medical emergency prior to the crash and taken to an area hospital where he died. However, further investigation revealed that he died as a result of injuries he received in the crash.

Dupont Boulevard was closed(Opens in a new window.) for approximately two hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

ELLENDALE, Del – On Friday afternoon, Ellendale Fire Company responded to a motor vehicle collision and vehicle fire, on DuPont Boulevard.

On April 17, supported by Sussex County Paramedics, and Delaware State Police Aviation, Ellendale Fire Company arrived on location to find passersby using fire extinguishers and performing CPR on the driver.  Ellendale Fire and Sussex County medics began patient care and deployed attack lines to extinguish the vehicle fire.

Police remained on the scene to investigate the accident and the patient was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
