Senator Johnny Mautz gives update on 2026 General Assembly

MARYLAND. – We are nearing the midway point of the 2026 Legislative Session. Republican Senator Johnny Mautz said that it has been a turbulent session. While there have been some highs, there have also been some extreme lows.

He tells WMDT, the topics so far have discussed federal immigration policy and how that applies in the state of Maryland and its respective counties. There also was discussion on redistricting, or what Senator Mautz calls ‘Gerry Mandering.’ The idea of the new congressional map would be to cross district lines and put forth more democratically led districts within areas that have long been established as Republican.

The budget shortfall is being addressed while funding the education blueprint plan, a situation Senator Mautz believes will reach a critical point in the future.

“We’re going into an interim session with an election – you know you borrowed money to make the budget good, and you know the economy is not keeping up with neighboring states, and it’s a very volatile time nationally, so I don’t think the economic outlook is very strong.”

WMDT will continue to provide extensive coverage coming out of the state assembly and legislation moving forward.
