Meet Alexis Simms; She’s blind, pregnant and has lupus

Victory church has been in the hot seat for the past year for doing what they call, the work of the kingdom. The church has served as an advocate for the homeless population by attending city and council meeting to speak on their behalf and sheltering Dover’s homeless community in and around the church.

21-year-old Alexis Simms has been staying in temporary housing with her 1-year-old daughter. But it’s not just the two of them.

“I’m due November 10th so, 16 days left,” said Simms.

The pregnant mother is also blind and living with lupus. We first heard from Simms when she made headlines as a controversial resident in Victory Church’s emergency housing. That housing was deemed illegal by both the City of Dover and Kent County due to zoning issues.

She tells 47 ABC she has been applying for housing in Delaware for a year and has been denied based on income, until Friday; when Dover housing approved her application.

“I applied for Dover housing,” explains Simms. “And because all the publicity and the state being under  attack with general news and everything, I’ll be moving in tomorrow.”

While there is no evidence that the current controversy surrounding Victory Church had anything to do with her housing approval, Simms believes the attention to the cause helped. She hopes to use her story to help others in a similar situation, vowing to attend every Dover Council meeting to be a voice for those in need.

“Im also here to speak upon the homeless that are still out there,” said Simms Monday night at the city council meeting. “I’m not understanding why yall’ won’t give people a place to stay but you don’t want them at the library. You wont give them a place to stay but you don’t want them at the bus stop. You wont give them a place to stay but you don’t want them on your streets, that makes no sense.”

Victory church is currently working on finding grant money to help with their cause. If you’re interested in helping them advocate for the homeless population or you have any donations, visit their webpage at http://www.victoryde.org/
