Sussex Montessori celebrates school groundbreaking

SEAFORD, Del. – Thursday was an exciting day in Seaford as ground was broken on the new Sussex Montessori School.

The school is a free charter school that will welcome more than 250 students in September. We’re told the school, on Dairy Lane, will have more of a campus feel with sets of buildings and pods. Officials say there will be lots of green space to encourage outdoor activities like gardening. We’re told there’s a lot of work to be done before the new school year but school leaders are excited to see it all come together.

“It’s just an amazingly rewarding opportunity to be able to engage with people, to bring something good for children and as I said in my comments earlier it is so important that we get this right because children are the spirit of our future and we really need to do the right things for children,” says Linda Zankowsky, chairwoman of the Sussex Montessori board.

The goal is to have teachers setting up in their classrooms by the end of June. This is a three year construction project with three phases. As the school expands to 4th and 5th grade, they’ll renovate the current barn on site into classrooms.
