Seven Birds Harmed by Minor Easton Utilities Diesel Leak
EASTON, Md. – The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Wildlife & Heritage Service (WHS) was alerted to a minor fuel spill that harmed seven birds on Tuesday morning.
On Feb. 10, WHS staff responded to the scene of the leak, and were assisted by members from the Maryland Department of Environment (MDE), the Phillips Wharf Environmental Center, the Waterfowl Festival, the Easton Police Department, and officials from Easton Utilities. Together, they were able to capture five Canada geese and two Mallard ducks that appear to have been impacted by the spill.
WFS staff say they have been in contact with the Oil Spill Response team from Tri-State Bird Research & Rescue in Newark, Delaware, and are transporting the oiled birds to them for rehabilitative treatment and care.
Easton Utilities said they had experienced a minor diesel leak the day prior and immediately contacted MDE. Officials said remediation efforts had begun, and that MDE was working in conjunction with local emergency response teams to eliminate environmental impacts. BP Environmental also responded to assist with mitigation efforts.
