Food delivery robots are rolling through Salisbury University with a Grubhub and Avride partnership
SALSIBURY, Md. — If you step onto Salisbury University’s campus, you might notice some new helpers rolling around, but they’re not students. Students and university officials tell us about their new food delivery robots through Grubhub and Avride.
Salisbury University Student, Luke Thurston said, “I’m feeling rather connected to my friend Sparky here. You know, it’s really actually awesome to see him driving around campus. I think it just brightens it up with the go gulls on the front. They’re so cool. It’s awesome. I feel like I’m in the future.”
Monday Morning, Salisbury University rolled out 15 new food delivery robots. University spokesperson Jason Rhodes said students can order food from one of many restaurants across campus.
“So those are things like our campus coffee shops, Hungry Minds Cafe, Chick-Fil-A. Students can go on the app, place an order, and, the robot will deliver it to a, drop off location nearest to them. ” said Rhodes.
He said the robots may just become an integral presence on campus.
Salisbury University student, Melea Pusey said, “It’s generally so cool because just know, just look at their little faces. They’re just so cute and they just brighten their day. Like, honestly, you could have the worst day ever and then you see them and they just make you so, just so happy. ”
While other students are excited for the innovation coming to the Eastern Shore.
Thurston said, “It feels like the future. It’s really awesome. It’s so convenient. Here comes another one now. That’s so fun. It’s like Wall-E. I love it. ”
Another student isn’t sold on the extra 3 dollars.
Student, Jordan Webster said, “They’re also a little bit of a scam. Like $3 when you could just walk three minutes. I mean, I think it’s cool, though. ”
Pusey said its a treat in itself escaping the frigid weather.
“I think they’re awesome because let me tell you, it’s really cold in Salisbury right now and not leaving the dorm is such like a special gift.” said Pusey.
The goal of these delivery robots is a safer, more secure delivery.
The university said they’re not opposed to bringing more robots to campus in the future.
