Smyrna Defeats Delmar for Volleyball Conference Title

The Smyrna volleyball earned their 2nd straight Henlopen Championship Tuesday night when they defeated Delmar 3-0. The Eagles improve to 13-2, while the Wildcats dropped to 9-7 on the season.

The Eagles would control the match from the net early on. Marquiesha Bennett came up with kill after kill from the middle to set the tempo. Once she got going, Kylie McCuster was able to spread the ball around more to get more of her outside hitters active as well. The Eagles would take the first two sets and build a quick lead in the third. The Wildcats would look to get back in the match and got a couple nice attacks from Brielle Johnson for a few points to spark a small run. But Smyrna wasn’t going to let their lead slip away. Facing match point, Danielle Keener would get a kill off a deflection to give the Eagles the match.

Both teams now return to action in the DIAA State Tournament, with Smyrna earning a No. 7 seed and a first round bye, while Delmar earned a No. 22 and will face STMA.
