Man Arrested After Assault, Making Gun Threat with Child in Residence
CAMBRIDGE, Md. – The Cambridge Police Department arrested a man on assault and gun charges on Tuesday evening.
Police arrested 36-year-old Jamel Levine Newman of Cambridge on charges of first and second degree assault, reckless endangerment, and related gun charges. He is currently being held at the Dorchester County Department of Corrections without bond.
At 7:55 p.m. on Jan. 27, officers responded to the 2300 block of Hudson Road for a report of an assault where a firearm was utilized. Upon arrival on the scene, police contacted a victim, who reported that Newman had assaulted them by grabbing them by the neck, throwing them to the ground, and holding them down while pointing a handgun at them.
Officers were able to locate Newman at a different apartment in the same complex. He was taken into custody without incident. Officers also located a loaded 9mm SAR Handgun containing a total of 12 rounds of ammunition. Further, a shotgun was located in a bedroom with additional ammunition for the firearms. Neither gun was locked with a safety lock or in a safe, and was accessible to a nine-year-old child in the residence. All firearms and ammunition were seized.
