Additional Military Explosive Recovered on Assateague
ASSATEAGUE ISLAND, Md. – The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office (WCFMO) responded to Assateague Island after park officials located another suspected unexploded military ordnance last week.
On Thursday, Jan. 22, the National Park Service contacted officials after finding the item on the north beach area of the seashore. This incident follows the discovery of two WWII-era M29A1 Practice Rockets on Assateague on Dec. 28, 2025.
Bomb technicians from the Ocean City Fire Department also responded to secure the area and evaluate the device. Officials say the item was examined and x-rayed on scene. The diagnostic information was then forwarded to the United States Air Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal from the Dover Air Force Base for technical assessment.
WCFMO deputies remained on the scene for approximately two hours as the situation was mitigated.
“This incident represents another occurrence in a series of unexploded military ordnance recoveries associated with Assateague Island, an area historically used for military training,” said WCFMO in a release. “The frequency of these responses continues to place significant demands on local, state, and federal resources and underscores the ongoing public safety concern presented by these discoveries.”
