The 2026 Legislative Session kicks off in Maryland Wednesday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The 2026 Maryland Legislative Session began Wednesday, and state officials met to prepare for another important year ahead.

The first day is often symbolic, officials are hoping to get support over the line as they create legislation. Delegate Sheree Sample Hughes of District 37A interviewed with WMDT, and tells us how excited she is for the first day.

“I’m excited and love representing the people of District 37-A.” The focus for the Eastern Shore Delegation is to help advocate for issues that are impacting the shore, many of which don’t necessarily impact the rest of the state.

According to State Senator of District 38, Mary Beth Carozza, the work ahead will be difficult, but vital.

“I want to be very clear, we have a lot of hard work this session. Maryland faces a budget crisis and an energy crisis, so we will be fighting the top issues using reliability and affordability.”

Making the state competitive, fighting against the $1.4 billion budget deficit, and fixing the energy crisis are the priorities for the Eastern Shore Delegation.

Senator Carozza tells us that 60% of the energy used in the state is not generated within the state.

Senator Johnny Mautz of District 37 says being more affordable will fix many of the issues. “We’re coming to Annapolis right now, the number one priority for all the states in the country is affordability. That is the cost of living.”

Delegate Sample-Hughes made it clear to WMDT, the best way to fix the budget issues is not to tax the hardworking Marylanders, which she says pushes them out.

“At the same time, the goal is to not put any additional burdens on the taxpayers for paying taxes or additional fees.”

WMDT will provide continuing coverage on the items coming out of the session.
