SALISBURY, Md. New Year’s arrived 12 hours early at the Salisbury Zoo, where families and kids gathered to ring in the new year before bedtime.

Salisbury Mayor Randy Taylor said, “This is an opportunity for the kids to have their own New Year’s Day and New Year’s Eve. So, at 12:00 today, we’re going to drop the ball and give the kids a chance to participate, just like the adults do.”

With 500 people attending last year’s event, the zoo is ready for the kids to take center stage.

Local mom Jenna said she’s excited for the early ball drop. Her son, James, shared his excitement: “Yes. Yes. You’re super excited. Yes. Yes.”

Parents also expressed their appreciation for the earlier celebration.

A group of four moms said, “Celebrating New Year’s as you do as a parent. I think we’ve all been trapped inside for a long time, and we’re excited to get out with our kids and do something fun.”

Salisbury Zoo Assistant Director Jamie Nichols said, “As a community, we don’t have as much time to spend with family. So anything that brings us together and allows us to spend time with our loved ones is wonderful.”

The special monkey adorning the ball was part of a fundraiser to support the zoo’s new habitat. Additional surprises will be unveiled in the old alligator building in early January.

Salisbury Zoo Director Chuck Eicholz said, “We’ll have some green arrow saris, which are currently in quarantine. Once they clear, they’ll move into their new habitat.”

When asked what they were excited for in the new year, the kids’ answers were simple.

Local kid Delaney said, “Um, I don’t know.”

If you missed the event earlier today, be sure to check out the New Year’s celebration in downtown Salisbury. Three local bands will perform, along with plenty of fun activities.
