Atlantic General Women’s Health Center in West OC
OCEAN CITY, Md. – In this week’s Health Beat, brought to you by TidalHealth, WMDT spoke with Dr. Margo Gill, a provider at Atlantic General Women’s Health Center.
“The women’s health concerns that are commonly addressed in my practice are really concerns that are universal to all women throughout their entire lifespan,” Dr. Gill said. “I address all the things in the office that, for a lot of women, they feel [are] being ignored or aren’t being specifically asked about.”
Some women come into the center with concerns about endometriosis. This under-diagnosed condition affects the outer tissue of the uterus, and can present in women for years before receiving proper care. The only surefire way to diagnose the endometriosis is with a laparoscopic procedure, which Dr. Gill says they can offer.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, more commonly referred to as PCOS, is what Dr. Gill calls “a bucket for saying you’re just not ovulating regularly.” Physicians start with PCOS patients by checking hormonal levels. Treatment of the syndrome looks different on a case by case basis, depending on age and whether a patient is looking to try for pregnancy.
Additionally, Dr. Gill tells us that menopause care is a complex area of medicine offered at the center. Multiple risk factors are taken into consideration when evaluating a woman’s menopausal stage, including a family history of breast cancer, strokes, and/or a personal history of blood clots. There is also different care for women who still have their uterus versus those who may have had a hysterectomy.
Yet, she emphasized that the most important aspect of the care is not identifying the condition, but rather meeting each patient where they’re at.
“I try and look at all patients as individuals. We have different needs, we have different concerns, but we also have very different risks,” Dr. Gill said. “We as physicians in health care need to address those all very individually. Women should seek help with any symptom that is negatively affecting their life or is out of character for them; they should come and talk to me or somebody else.”
