Wicomico Civic Center will get new upgrades
SALISBURY, Md. – Some new construction at the Wicomico Civic Center, home to the 43rd annual Governors Challenge. The largest holiday tournament is gearing up to start on Friday, December 26th.
This new construction here at the Civic Center will bring in new options for staff.
James Simmons explains what makes the tournament so special.
“Across the country, we have 12 states and Canada. Teams from California, Utah, Arizona, Florida, and the whole Mid-Atlantic.”
Over $14 million is being used at the Wicomico Civic Center for a new, wider roof and entrance. Wicomico County Department of Recration, Parks, and Tourism Steve Miller, says the project is important for the area.
“This is probably the biggest project that’s happened to this building since it burned down in the 70’s.”
Miller says the plans call for added space for a food court, and outdoor areas will generate more interest for companies looking to book the arena. “We are really hoping that it will generate more events and activities that the public will enjoy.”
Miller said, despite the construction, events are still being held throughout the construction project.
“Like I said, the show goes on. We have still been running events. We had a big comedian come in the fall, we have the governor’s challenge coming.”
The Governors Challenge is set to bring its most talented lineup ever, according to James Simmons, tournament organizer. He tells WMDT, the amount of eyes on the tournament and great competition makes it one of the largest in the country.
“People don’t understand where people are coming from during this event. Even on the media side, the college coaches, the scouts, and the referees are from 8 different states.”
The project is set to end at for both the roof and entrance in Spring of 2026.
