New electrical vehicle partnership in Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, Md. – A new agreement in Ocean City focusing on electric vehicle charging stations. The move was discussed at the last Mayor and Council meeting, as it passed 6-0.

According to City Manager, Terry McGean, a number of charging stations were located around the Ocean City parking lots.

“The majority of them are right now installed and maintained by a entity known as Electrical Vehicle Institute, EVI.”

That partnership with EVI is over. Now the popular resort town will begin a new deal with ezVoltz. Transportation Manager Rob Shearman tells WMDT, the deal with EVI had some challenges.

“We had this agreement with EVI, that we were providing the chargers and maintaining the chargers, and we were sharing the revenue.” Shearman adds that those chargers had run their course over time.

“We noted a number of those chargers as about May of 2023 were out of service and had been out for a while,” said Shearman.

The town of Ocean will now receive 16 new ev charging stations installed and maintained by ezVolts. Shearman said the town had inquired with several companies before making the deal.

“They were very engaged in the process, they sent a team in September of this year to do a full site inspection of all 16 locations.”

The business partnership model – could see the town of Ocean City get a little boost in revenue.

“They are funding the equipment and funding the installation, and as I said, they are splitting the charging revenue 80 to 20 so that they can keep 80% to recoup their costs.”

The new vendor, ezVoltz, has a different model for customers. They only have to pay once, instead of paying separately for charging and parking fees.

Officials tell WMDT that is a great thing for the community who uses them consistently.
