Burn Pit Fire Destroys Three Sheds in Delmar
DELMAR, Md. – An unattended burn pit destroyed three sheds at a Delmar residence on Tuesday afternoon.
At 2:43 p.m. on Nov. 25, crews from the Delmar Fire Department responded to a residence on Roy West Road after the owner discovered a fire on the property. Thirty-five firefighters, including supporting crews from the Parsonsburg, Pittsville, and Gumboro fire companies, battled the blaze for 20 minutes before successfully putting it out. The scene was cleared in about one hour.
The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal determined the fire to be accidental in nature. The residents were using a burn pit approximately an hour before the fire, and believed the fire was completely out before leaving the residence. By the time they returned, the sheds had caught on fire. Winds and dry conditions contributed to the cause of the fire.
The value of the damage sustained to the sheds and their contents is estimated to be $225,000.
