Five-Vehicle Accident in Lewes Kills Two

Fatal Crash

LEWES, Del. – The Delaware State Police (DSP) are investigating a fatal five-vehicle crash that killed two on Friday afternoon.

Around 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 7, a Ford Edge, a Nissan Altima, a BMW X2, and a BMW 135 were traveling southbound, in the right lane, on Coastal Highway, slowing or stopped for traffic. At the same time, a Peterbilt dump truck was also traveling southbound in the right lane, approaching the traffic ahead. A preliminary investigation by police revealed that the dump truck failed to slow for the traffic ahead and as a result, the front of the truck struck the rear of the Ford, causing a chain reaction collision with the other three vehicles.

The driver of the Ford, 62-year-old Charlene Broccolo from Bel Air, Maryland was taken to an area hospital where she died. A passenger in the same vehicle, 64-year-old Albert Broccolo, also from Bel Air, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The drivers of the Nissan, BMW X2, and the Peterbilt dump truck were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the BMW 135 was not injured.

Coastal Highway was closed for approximately five hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
