Discover Delmarva: Councell Farms

CORDOVA, Md- Nothing beats locally grown produce on Delmarva. And the Councell family knows all about this- as they’ve been tending this land for hundreds of years. We met up with 11th-generation family member Melissa Councell for a tour around the property and to learn about the local offerings. Councell says, “We grow 10 acres of all of our fall squashes and gourds, and pumpkins. We have over 30 different varieties of pumpkins. Your traditional orange carving, Howden, all the way down to the moody, the Cinderella’s the fairytales”

The entrance is covered in crops straight from the fields, from the mums, gourds, corn, and the fancy pumpkins. Setting the fall vibe, Melissa tells us they do sort their offerings strategically as you browse around. Councell told us about the wide variety of squashes they offer. “So our fall squashes include our spaghetti squash, butternut, buttercup, acorn, hubberts, we feature those down the left side of our tent, and then on the right side is all our decorative gourds.”

Got it, so don’t bite the mini pumpkins…. The fall fun is just getting started as you approach their Field of Fun with a can’t-miss attraction, “The combine is one of our original pieces. When we decided to take on agrotourism. My Dad and a friend were able to repurpose the combine. They built tunnels through it and slid down it. We’re really proud that it’s definitely an original piece. It’s been here many, many years.”

They have over 30 different fall activities, from their barrel rolls, jumping pillows, and even some basketball.l Just a heads up, if you’re standing around while Kolby and I take our shots. Their signature attraction is their corn maze. That is unlike any corn maze you’ll find on the shore, according to Councell. “We’re really proud of our corn maze, which my brother designs. Which is not always typical. A lot of places have a company come in and design them. We design our own./ And we really focus on the fact that you can get in and out of it in 15 or 20 minutes. It’s great for moms, great for little’s.”

So we tried it for ourselves, and while it was a challenge But the good news is I didn’t have to spend the night in the corn field. We finished with some ice cream and apple cider slushies- I don’t care what the season, there’s always a reason for a sweet treat.

They offer educational tours as well, which is great for kids and teaches them about Agriculture. To plan your visit, you can visit their website.
