Sen. Kaine says proposed budget has benefits and downfalls

Back and forth conversations are not unheard of between lawmakers when it comes to government funding.

With the threat of a government shutdown looming, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia spoke to reporters via teleconference on the focus on government operation through the end of this fiscal year.

"Continuing resolutions are like doing budgets looking in the rear-view mirror. You ought to be looking in the windshield and doing budgets based on future priorities. A continuing resolution basically has you budgeting through the rear-view mirror and well, let's just do what we've been doing for the last few months," explains Senator Kaine.

While Senator Kaine says he's confident a resolution will be reached, he also said it was "unnecessary" to grapple with short term spending along with a budget for Fiscal Year 18 back to back.

Kaine also added the proposed budget by President Donald Trump does have both benefits and downfalls. He says one benefit is the additional funding for the Department of Defense; however, he worries cuts to departments like Agriculture could hurt.
