Previewing Small Business Week

Sunday will kickoff this year's National Small Business Week, recognized since 1963.  The goal is to highlight the critical contributions made by the nation's entrepreneurs and small business owners.

According to 2012 U.S. Census Bureau data, business with fewer than 20 workers make up more than 86 percent of the businesses in the nation.

John Hickson with the School of Business at Salisbury University says small businesses with 10 or fewer employees make up more than half of the businesses in Maryland.

Locally, Hickman pointed to Perdue, saying many large companies you see started small.  He says the purpose of the week is to raise awareness for what small businesses do for the economy, both locally and nationally.

"(They're) supporting the schools, the other businesses.  Most of them also purchase their business from other local business instead of nationally.  So it helps to grow the economy in more ways that you often don't even see."
