Dorchester County Preparing for Gran Fondo New York this Weekend

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – The City of Cambridge is gearing up for yet another major competition.

It’s the third annual Gran Fondo New York in Dorchester County, starting in downtown Cambridge early Sunday morning.

“It’s great for our restaurants and our retail shops It’s very exciting. actually the whole county benefits, But it’s actually a little bit of a different race. It’s a speed endurance race and it goes quickly,” says Dorchester County Economic Development Director, Susan Banks.

This comes off of the heels of Ironman Maryland; in which thousands flocked from across the country to Dorchester County.

Assistant City Manager, Brandon Hesson says while they won’t see numbers like that for Gran Fondo, they’re still going to need more than a few hands.

Brandon says, “Gran Fondo New York is a little bit different that our police department and our normal Public Works department can can can serve this event and then volunteers kind of supplement it.”

With the summer season in the rearview mirror, an event like this delivers an economic boost. Especially as they continue to grow the event for years to come.

Susan tells us, “This is the type of race that we really like here in Cambridge and in Dorchester. I mean, we like all races, but this one is quick. They come in and they’re done with in a matter of hours. They spend money and they’re here for the weekend.”

While Brandon says, “…you’ll notice people coming here the week before. They’ll come next year to ride bikes. This is a wonderful place to ride bikes.”

Gran Fondo will take people from Downtown Cambridge through the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge, and out towards Taylor’s Island before returning to Cambridge.
