Salisbury Airport busy this Thanksgiving, millions expected to fly

SALISBURY, Md. – The day before Thanksgiving is the second busiest travel day with almost 3 million people expected to fly. So 47 ABC caught up with some people coming from near and far to spend time with family on the Eastern Shore this holiday.

“We flew out of Ft. Wayne. Ft. Wayne to Philly and then Philly to Salisbury,” says Courtney Rawlinson.

“We came from Memphis, went to Orlando for a couple days to see the parks then came up here through Philadelphia,” says Kevin Duffy.

People from all over the country are flying in and out of the Salisbury airport this Thanksgiving. “I’m visiting my dad, my stepmom, my stepbrother and my step sister,” says Rawlinson.

For some, this is their first time celebrating the holiday on the Eastern Shore. “This is the first year that we’ve come up here since they just moved up here. Sometimes we’ll go to a movie while the turkey is cooking,” says Duffy.

Other visitors tell 47 ABC they usually trade off, on which years they travel for the holiday. “Yeah not every year. We do every other year so it’s always good when we are here,” says Rawlinson.

“We got a whole family visiting here. My sister lives in Ocean City and last year everybody came down to Georgia to my house. This year we’re going to her house,” says Jeff Lundy.

As to when travelers will head home, Sunday seems to be the popular day. “Yeah we want to get home have a day before we have to go back to work,” says Rawlinson.

“Sunday we tried to get back before the Steeler’s game but that didn’t work out,” says Lundy.

But visitors say they’re excited to spend these next couple of days surrounded by loved ones. “Just we wanted to be here with our family on Thursday on Thanksgiving,” says Rawlinson.

“Just being with my family. Everybody getting together. There’s only one time a year we all get to see each other so it’s a good time.” says Lundy.

Now the least busy travel day is actually Thanksgiving day so you’re in luck if you’re flying on Thursday. And the most busy travel day is Sunday.

If you’re traveling by car this Thanksgiving, you’re also not alone. According to AAA, more than 49 million people will be hitting the roads this holiday. The good news is gas isn’t too expensive right now. The average price for a gallon is right around $2.59.
