Electric Bike Crash Kills 14-Year-Old in Dover
DOVER, Del. – The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a school bus and an electric bicycle that occurred Friday afternoon, leaving one teenager dead.
At approximately 4:00 p.m. on Sept. 12, a school bus was traveling eastbound on West Lebanon Road, approaching the intersection with Royal Grant Way. At the same time, an electric bicycle being ridden by two teenagers was traveling eastbound on a paved sidewalk that runs alongside the right-turn lane. As the bus began to turn right, the e-bike failed to stop at the posted bicycle sign and continued into the Royal Grant Way intersection, striking the passenger side of the school bus.
The 16-year-old, who is believed to have been operating the e-bike, is from Camden and was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. The 14-year-old, who is believed to have been the passenger on the e-bike, was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police have identified him as Reis Yoc-Santos, of Dover.
The bus, affiliated with the Caesar Rodney School District, was driven by a 75-year-old man from Magnolia who was not injured. Twenty-one elementary-school-age students on the bus were also unharmed.
