Wicomico Co. Exec. calls for teacher’s resignation

SALISBURY, Md. — Local officials are calling for the immediate resignation of a local middle school teacher after comments were made about the killing of political commentator Charlie Kirk. Kirk, who founded the conservative youth activist group Turning Point USA, was shot and killed on Wednesday afternoon while speaking at Utah Valley University.

Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano sent a formal letter to the Board of Education, demanding the resignation of Salisbury Middle School teacher Jay Waggoner. After the news broke Wednesday, Waggoner commented a meme on Facebook, depicting President Donald Trump speaking to Kirk, and alluding to the Epstein files.

“If you are going to represent Wicomico County Public Schools and this community, you need to make sure that you are being aware of your surroundings and you are aware of what you’re posting online,” Giordano said.

Giordano posted her demand letter to her own Facebook page, garnering hundreds of outraged comments and generating even more reactions and shares.

“The community is up in arms right now and is really frustrated. I think that Wicomico County Public Schools, if they were to keep him employed, I think they’re putting themselves at risk,” Giordano said.

Despite the county executive’s demand, the school district says they’re reviewing the situation carefully and will “take appropriate action in accordance with our policies and commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment.”

Public Information Officer Tracy Sahler called the situation an “unnecessary and unwelcome disruption to school and school system operations.” She added that the post does not reflect the school district’s values.

Attempts to reach Waggoner were unsuccessful.

Giordano shared this message Thursday night:

“I’m all about freedom of speech, but what people forget is you have freedom of speech, but not freedom of consequences,” Giordano said.
