Health officials issue warning for New Castle residents who may have come in contact with raccoon

Delaware health officials are warning people in the Sharpley area of New Castle who may have come in contact with a rabid raccoon yesterday.

The raccoon was picked up after a fight with a domestic cat. The cat is currently under quarantine.

Anyone who may have been bitten, scratched or was near the raccoon should call their doctor or the DPH rabies program at 302-744-4995.

People are encouraged to avoid wild animals, keep their animals up to date on their shots, and keep pets indoors or on a leash.
