Ocean City to Designate Special Event Zone for BikeFest
OCEAN CITY, Md. – The Ocean City Police Department (OCPD) announced that next week Ocean City will be designated a Special Event Zone, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 10, through Sunday, Sept. 14, during the OC Rock & Ride (OC BikeFest).
The Special Event Zone reduces established speed limits in the zone and increases fines for violations. Additionally, legislation signed in 2020 allows for increased penalties for specific motor vehicle violations. Similar to a construction zone, violators will face increased fines or, in some cases, arrest. Citizens can expect a significant police presence, as officers from multiple allied agencies will assist OCPD. Additionally, significant traffic congestion and alternative traffic patterns are anticipated throughout the weekend.
Deputy of Communications Ashley Miller said this will put safety at the forefront. “We were starting to see a lot of spectators and increased speeds, and that’s what the special event zone legislation is, it really focuses on our motorist events, and making sure not only are the drivers are safe, but the pedestrians and spectators.”
Spectators are urged to keep the sidewalks clear for pedestrian traffic, and should not incite the spinning of wheels, “burn-outs,” or other unlawful stunts by motorists. Further, with high pedestrian traffic expected, pedestrians are encouraged to remain alert and always use crosswalks, wait for the signal to change, and ensure drivers see you while crossing.
OCPD would also like to remind everyone that there is no trailer or oversized vehicle parking on any street or paved public lot without a permit between May 1 and October 31. There is no trailer parking or oversized vehicle parking on Baltimore Avenue at any time.
