(OCEAN CITY, Md) – While we may be in the last month of the summer season, the Ocean City Beach Patrol is still going strong with one of their long-standing programs.

The Beach Patrol’s Junior Lifeguard Program saw nearly 100 kids ages 10 and up learn how to become lifeguards.

Kids under 17 years old are allowed to take part in the program to potentially fast track their certification as lifeguards.

Patrol Captain Butch Arbin tells us how vital it is, especially on a day where rip currents are causing an uproar on the beach, to start training the next crop of lifeguards.

“An educated beach patron is a safe beach patron. These kids know about rip currents. They know about shore break. They know about a lot of safety things on the beach. So getting them trained that earlier, they’re lifelong lessons,” says Captain Arbin.

Butch tells us they only have one more session this summer for this year’s Junior Lifeguard Program, which takes place next week.
