Cambridge Hosts 2nd Annual Reading of Declaration of Independence

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – David Rose is the Dorchester County Town Crier, a role that comes with reading the Declaration of Independence on the 4th of July.

And for David, it’s a big honor to be the one ringing the bell on the holiday.

Rose says, “It was kind of missing that celebration of the declaration. I think it was an inspiring document that could be read out loud and to get people together to hear it. Now, most of the people haven’t heard the whole thing, and it’s an opportunity for them to celebrate the fourth and also learn something about our history.”

This is the second year that the city of Cambridge and Dorchester County have held a reading of the declaration on Independence Day. With Cambridge Mayor, Lejan Cephas saying that it’s a small step towards making Cambridge a prime location to celebrate.

“<And it’s also great with with the building community and not only building community, you know, also preparing everyone for the great grand event for today, the fireworks, the 4th of July fireworks here in Cambridge, which is which basically I’ve heard is the best on the Eastern Shore,” says Mayor Cephas.

For a history buff like David, getting to be a part of a growing tradition like reading the Declaration of Independence is incredible because of how much of a learning experience it is.

“This is something that’s important part of our history and it’s the reason we actually celebrate. So I think people do want to have an experience that involves something directly that has to do with history,” says David.

The Dorchester County Visitor’s Center already has plans for next year’s Independence Day surround America’s 250th anniversary.
