Seaford Town Center to improve waterfront
SEAFORD, Del. – A major redevelopment plan to improve the waterfront in Seaford is being discussed by city leaders.
At Thursday night’s Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, city officials will review the site plan for the proposed Seaford Town Center.
Blades resident Jerry Dorsey says the proposed Seaford Town Center will be a needed addition to the city.
“We need some more income, some more diversity and new businesses and this shore building down here will definitely add to the town and its growth,” said Dorsey. “People are looking forward to seeing some new changes and this will be a great addition to the town.”
Architect Keith Fisher with Fisher Architecture said the project got a kickstart after developers received a $3 million grant from the state of Delaware.
That will enable them to remove the former power plant that stood in its place and work with an environmental cleanup company to redo the area.
“The goal is, I want to say it’s about five or six total buildings that will produce close to 200 apartments, some commercial retail and a waterfront restaurant is the ultimate goal to achieve,” said Fisher.
The site will largely follow a similar structure to apartment complexes that were built on the other side of the river.
“We’ve been working with the developers I want to say since about 2012 on the other side of the bridge on the Nanticoke River, a development called the Residence at River Place, so they really started there and once they got in and worked with the town and realized how successful that was, they began to move down the river literally,” said Fisher.
Ultimately, Fisher said the new Seaford Town Center will bring many benefits to the immediate and surrounding community.
“Infusing this many residents into a city, into a downtown is going to help support the local businesses, it’s going to support the local restaurants, it’s going to bring a much needed boost to that economy for sure,” he said.
