EASTON, Md. – Easton officials are reminding the public to be cautious of what they place in their garbage and how to properly dispose of certain items.

We’re told one of the Town’s garbage trucks caught fire earlier this week after lithium ion batteries were thrown in the trash. A discarded electric pool skimmer was the reported culprit, and the batteries inside combusted and caught the surrounding garbage in the truck on fire.

Crews took swift action and dumped the garbage in a back lot, away from houses and other nearby flammable objects.

Officials want to remind the public that lithium ion batteries cannot be disposed of in the trash and must be taken to disposal sites. Lowes in Easton offers a free lithium battery disposal service.
