Community members come together to help local immigrants

Folks from local schools, businesses, and churches coming together Monday night in hopes of hashing out a plan to help immigrant families in our communities.

Immigration Specialist, Leila Borrero Krouse, tells 47 ABC that immigrants are worried about the Trump administration.

Krouse says, "I know for families they're not going shopping, I know families that aren't going to the churches, to the services, they're afraid to leave their houses."

For the past couple months Krouse has been going out to different communities passing out information to families on what to do or not to do.

This evening was all about how community members can help.

"We recognize that there is a great need right now as it's a difficult time right now for immigrant families, so we're putting our heads together to see how we can be supportive allies to the immigrant community," explains Pastor Gregg Knepp.

Pastor Knepp is the organizer for this immigration assistance meeting and he says folks in different parts of the community want to help.

That's why they have been brainstorming ways of how to do just that and knowledge of how important immigrants are in our area is the first step.

"I think a general education among U.S. citizens with regard to how beneficial the immigrant community is. They're working here in chicken processing plants, they're working in the fields, in the hospitality industry, and restaurant industry. I mean literally there's no place that immigrants aren't benefiting our economy here on the eastern shore."

Getting the word out about immigrant's rights is next on their agenda so they can ease the minds of many afraid.
