Wildlife Crossing Connectivity Act aims to create smarter development
MARYLAND – Maryland government officials have taken the time to create legislation they believe will keep roads safe, and wildlife from becoming roadkill.
We’ve always been taught to look both ways when crossing the street to stay safe, and now with HB0731 and SB635, Maryland Lawmakers want to ensure that our animals are protected as well.
The Wildlife Connectivity and Crossings Act protects endangered wildlife from habitat fragmentation. Maryland Sponsor Delegate Sheila Ruth says, the State Highway Administration doesn’t currently address the hazardous concern of animals running into the streets after their homes have been destroyed by road expansion.
“There are over 31,000 wildlife vehicle collisions in Maryland every year, so this act would help to protect both drivers and wildlife… What this bill would do is sort of laying the groundwork for what we expect will be a long-term change of culture- to make sure that when we’re building roads, when we’re expanding roads, when we’re developing, that we’re looking at making sure the habitat is connected”
The bill would create a coalition of government officials and wildlife non-profits and require counties to consider wildlife when developing land use comprehensive plans. She says not being cautious, can become very costly for the state and its citizens.
“The average insurance claim for a wildlife vehicle collision $6,000, and we know from a report from the Maryland Insurance Administration, that cost is being passed on to consumers in the form of higher rates.”
She says ultimately, the state is concerned about safety. “Our roads are very important to our way of life, they connect us, they help us to get places. But, for wildlife they can divide habitat, make it difficult for animals to get to mates, to food, and they also create a hazard both to wildlife and to humans.”
Delegate Ruth says both people and possums should be able to travel the roads, safely. You can opt to donate to the state’s efforts by visiting their website.
