Milford Museum to hold program on Tuskegee Airmen
Black History Month
MILFORD, De. – Local organizations along the Delmarva are gearing up for Black History Month, and in Milford, it’s no different.
The Milford Museum is holding an American History Series to celebrate February, and because they believe many Americans have a passing familiarity with the Tuskegee Airmen and their overall achievements during World War II, and that their contributions should be acknowledged and respected.
Milford Museum Director Tom Summers says that the Tuskegee Airmen stretched the boundaries of what the military could do at the time. “A lot of people weren’t sure if African Americans had the ability to be an effective military unit. So, the magnifying glass was really on them during World War II, and they really proved themselves to be very effective.”
Summers says the contributions they made were astounding and was so notable, it led to President Truman integrating military forces after World War II, and this is a history, that is often overlooked. “They were actually fighting for a county which was really considering them as secondary citizens. And people need to find out who these people were and how brave and courageous they actually were to do what they did.”
The Free event will take place at the Milford Library located at 11 S.E. Front Street in Milford, DE on February 8th starting at 1 pm. For more information, please contact the Museum at (302) 424-1080.
