The Brightside: Blade to Beauty
DELMAR, Del. – A permanent make-up artist and veteran in Delaware is using her profession to advocate for those who aren’t just in need of enhancing natural features. But in need of a confidence boost due to diseases such as cancer and alopecia.
“I’ve had clients cry because they love their outcome, which brings me so much joy,” says Brittany White, owner of Balde to Beauty.
Brittany White is a professional make-up artist who has a passion for using her blade as a tool to give confidence to those who may need a boost. On paper, she provides her clients with realistic hair strokes through different techniques, but her “why” is what sets her apart. “I lost my grandmother due to breast cancer so it was an extra booster to me to do something like this to help others gain confidence in what they lack, and it just inspired me to kick start and not stop.”
White tells us her business isn’t just about permanent makeup, it’s about giving those enduring medical treatments – such as hair loss due to cancer or alopecia – a space and a way to feel beautiful and confident. “When I had my first ever patient and she said I’m here because I lost my brows due to cancer, it kind of just hit me like okay, I’m about to make her feel completely stunned when she gets that mirror in her hands.” White adds, “It just makes me feel complete as a person knowing that I’m making other people completely happy about themselves.”
For clients like Deangelo Bagwell who battles alopecia, his journey to White was an eye-opening one. He tells us, “I would wear a hat because I was losing my brows so my confidence was kind of lacking. Your hair is falling out, you can’t stop your hair from falling out, you’re going to the doctor and he’s giving you pills and stuff but it’s not giving you results like you wanted.” He goes on to say, “It was an emotional thing, I didn’t want to go out as much but it took an effect on my life and my confidence.”
While the idea of permanent makeup wasn’t necessarily the goal for Deangelo White’s safe space paired with the final results gave him a fresh new outlook. “I’m back to mingling with people and I feel more open to talk about it because I know it’s not just me going through it, it’s other people going through it,” says Bagwell.
While White is focused on running her business, it’s her clientele that she says is her driving factor, and she wants to be known for more than just permanent makeup. “It’s just very heartwarming knowing that I feel like I’m doing my purpose in life and it’s just great, I love it,” says White.
The idea is to find whatever way makes you feel confident – no matter what you’re going through. “You’re losing your hair and you can’t stop it, there’s nothing wrong with you, your health is right but it’s just, that you have alopecia.” He goes on to say, “Whatever can bring you back to normal I would tell you to take that step, whatever can give you your confidence back.”
Meanwhile, White tells us, she hopes others can do the same. “It is a huge deal but I feel like if I’m willing to help you, don’t feel ashamed coming and sitting in my chair because I’m trying to give you the best look.”
